Hardstyle USA
Rhino 660 Intake Kit
|
Product Overview:
One of the first mods we should have done to our Rhino was this one. Probably the most popular because its an easy performance gain that allows your engine to breath. In addition is a cheap engine modification to get your rhino breathing better. Some how we got carried away with the big items like long travel suspension, bumpers, tires, wheels and some how forgot about the small stuff like this. When doing some routine engine maintenance we took the initiative to finally install this intake kit we've had for a few weeks. This kit is from Hardstyle USA and features a billet aluminum adapter, open element performance filter, and a pre-filter from Outerwears for extra protection. |

Installating the Hardstyle Kit:
The Hardstyle kit is probably one of the easier engine mods we'll ever do to our Rhino. This kit took us about 30 minutes to complete. Basic installation involved removing the seats and engine cover to get to the filter box. Once the engine and stock filter box is assessable it was a matter of removing the factory intake box and filter. We set aside the stock filter and filter box lid because these items will no longer be needed. (a few more items to add to our "old rhino" parts box) Once the factory air box has been removed you'll need to cut out the Hardstyle drilling template provided and trace it onto the factory air box. This is where we took our time and made sure everything was aligned properly to avoid complications later. Not that it would cause any problems really but more so limit the potential air flow. We aligned the billet adapter using the center hole in the factory air box as our primary guide. As long as the large hole in the center was aligned we could expect no limitations on air flow. Once we marked the holes we drilled them out an mounted the adapter. Now that the adapter has been mounted the air box we could now attach our new hardstyle high flow air filter to the adapter using the supplied hose clamp. Before attaching the filter I found it was easier to squeeze the pre-filter onto the filter before mounting it to the air box. There isn't much room in the factory air box to squeeze the pre-filter on after People sometimes ask if the pre-filters are necessary and although Outerwears are often overlooked they can be very beneficial to keeping the extra dirt out of your filter and engine. The Hardstyle kit comes with it so its not an option with this kit.

Conclusion:
After installing the kit we fired up the Rhino and let it idle for a few minutes. While waiting for the engine to warm up we could definitely notice there was more air passing through the intake just by the increase in sound. Our 660 was getting more air and with a couple rev's it was very apparent our Rhino can finally breath freely. So after letting it warm up for a little while we took it around the block for a couple test laps. The power was noticeable right of the bat and our 660 felt like it was more responsive and quicker. The power gain wasn't much but every bit counts and with the combination Hardstyle intake, CDI, Coil, and Dr.D exhaust our rhino is now sporting some proven aftermarket performance products.
There is one thing we did dislike about the kit and that is the lack of a included crankcase breather filter. Fortunatly I had a small filter to use.
One thing we'll have to make sure we check more often is how clean the filter is. With the added flow and now not running an air box lid our filters going to need to be cleaned a little more often. That's alright though because we usually do some routine checks and cleaning after every other ride anyways. For more information about Hardstyle USA's rhino kit give them a call or shoot them an e-mail.
Note: - Hardstyle USA recommends re-jetting your carb after installing this intake kit. We changed our jetting a few days later and noticed a even a little more power from our Rhino.
