Smittybilt G.E.A.R. Seat covers and Tailgate Cover
Product Review

Two things about wheelin, you get dirty, and you need a place to keep tools and other things organized when your on the trail. Here is where the Smittybilt G.E.A.R. seat covers and tailgate cover come into play. If you need organization of tools and supplies when your on the trail and you want to expand the life of the material on your seats, this is a great solution.

You can find $20 seat covers with pockets and pouches at your local auto parts store, but they're not quality, and they're not customizable. These Smittybilt G.E.A.R. seat covers are made of durable canvas material and has very well made straps to adjust the fit around the seats. They come with a number of pockets and can be arranged in any way that suits your needs. Holding anything from flashlights to compass' to the trash you don't want to leave on the trail and even tow straps, shackles, and your winch remote. These things are versatile!

The tailgate cover is made out of the same quality material as the seat covers, but has a plastic piece sewn into the parameter with gusseted wholes punched in it for added strength where the screws go through to secure it to the tailgate. It also comes with a couple different bags to mount on it for storage and organization. We ended up using a few leftover bags from the front seats, and mounted them on the tailgate cover.

Installing the G.E.A.R. seat covers could not be any easier. We just slipped them right on and only had to change the top two side straps to tighten up on the headrest for our JK, then for the bottom hook the six elastic hooks up under the seat cushion and they're on. (When routing the elastic straps be sure to keep them away from the sliding mechanism on the bottom of the seat. If you cross this you could cut the cord when adjusting the seat back and forward.) Now start placing pockets where you want them and fill them up!

The tailgate cover was super easy to put on as well. It is cut perfectly to size and is obvious where its supposed to go, so we started with the top left corner and worked our way across, then down both sides and across the bottom with the self-tapping screws that are provided. The instructions say to use a drill bit to pre-drill, but our kit came with two packets of screws so we had plenty extra incase a couple self-tapping screws didn't self-tap. We only ended up using one of the extras because on the right where the latch is has 2 layers of sheet metal instead of just the one layer like the rest of the tailgate.

There was only a couple of problems that we found. First: Since the JK has that adjustable headrest, they didn't quite fit like we thought they would. They still look good and perform their function, but they should have a much better fit on a TJ seat. Second: When folding the rear seat up, we noticed that the pockets on the back of the front seat caught the headrests of the back JK seat and we had to slide the front seats up a little to get the rear seat to fold and tumble all the way.

In the end.... The seat covers are great quality, good looking, and functional, but if you have a 2 door JK or standard TJ (not unlimited), they are not ideal if you fold and tumble your rear seat a lot. The tailgate cover.... We LOVE it. There is no more off road bag with straps and winch remote and gloves and such taking up room in the already small cargo space. Now it is all neatly packed away and easily accessible. Overall, great products and very innovative!
